    Wink Pimping up my ride...

    Hi,

Rebasing to make the ships sit closer to the waterline. Just a start... more ideas to come.

Looking good Rafael, and I like your choice of photo corners for the base.

The modellers in us overthink solutions. Could not find tiny brass or plastic angles small enough to clip to the base edge to hold the ship cards. Was contemplating scratchbuilding these clips but then my wife saw and offered her stash of photo corners. Violah!!!

The base are water textured plastic sheets.

That is so bizarre, I was just thinking the same thing this morning...how to reduce the clunky bases. The only problem I see is that one would be tempted to move the ships by holding the masts if the bases were TOO thin.

Minor touch but added wake to the base.

Now that is clever, really like the base and the wake.
The only down side for me is what Steve said about moving during the gameplay. Last weekend there were punters who even with the chuncky bases moved the ships via the masts, to my horror, especial as I have m8ne rigged and ratlined

The wake is not difficult to do. The liquitex dries transparent so uts just a subtle gesture. The 3mm base is not difficult to grab. I've only played once and don't recall where i handle the model. May be more conscious when i rig the model. But next in line would be broadside markers

I used a generic textured plastic sheet from a local art supply shop.
Modelling shops will have but a bit more expensive.

It looks like your sheet is about as thick as the original clear bases, or about 2.0mm. The Plastruct bases say that they are 0.5mm thick. I like the thicker cross-section What section does one look for these in an art supply store?

Mine is actually 3mm. That is the only thickness available here (lucky as i was originally looking for 1.5 mm). 3mm is pretty easy to handle, 5mm thick would be better i guess.

    Those bases look great!

I use my ships at conventions a lot and I would have concerns about the bases being to thin as well. Still big improvement over the stock bases.

Firstly what a good question Pete, and secondly welcome on board shipmate from all your fellow mariners here at the Anchorage.
I assumed that it was a paper print sandwiched between the acrylic base and the water effect film, but now I am not too sure.

Guys, that's what the photo corners are for! They hold the base cards.

We do overthink things. I was also trying to figure out how to sandwich/clip the base cards under the plastic base till my wife saw me struggling and handed me her leftover photo corners. The photo corners make it possible to replace or flip the cards under the transparent base as necessary.

    Hi,
I have an 11 year old boy so we need to have pirates! Better yet, ghost pirates
The Black Pearld rises from the depths of the ocean... propelled by the souls of sailors past... salty water gushing out of its skinless hull.

Where did you come by such a magnificent model and how does her scale compare to our ships?
    Thanks for your posting.

This is actually the ship Shadespire from GW's Dreadfleet. I had to shorten the sails and got a bit over zealous at the rear. This looks like a galleon (the Black Pearl is) and sits beside the HMS Royal Sovereign. Also got shipwrecks and will use their measuring stick. Purchased these as bits from ebay. I also got a felucca but is too big for SoG

Here's another one - portable mat tiles. I usually play out with friends at a club or with my son over weekend brunch in a cafe. A portable terrain suits this. Fits in B4 holder. A bit of dark blue wash, crest highlight and gloss varnish should seal the deal. Also found children's air dried clay easier and less messier to sculpt as islands. Dries sturdy and light too. A dollar to a brick. Best of all its pre-colored so just a bit of flocking...

Got a compass and caliper for some nautical immersion. The compass for wind direction and caliper for range. Can roll a dice to randomize wind direction. Use true north or fix the needle and align with the grid - its your choice.

Tried a few markers - broadside and reload. Haven't tried in game yet so am not sure if it'll benefit gameplay

Like the reload markers Rafael. Gives everyone an instant visual of the status of each ship in play. With mine I have to rely on turning Keith's smoke markers over, on which I have added grey to the backs. This can still be confusing at a glance. Your system seems more positive.

We are able to play Wings of War w/o the control boards. Seems indispensable in SoG cos more things to track. But yes, the markers give a visual cue of the ship's status

The only weakness I can see is if you replace your markers at the end of move two. Then the enemy may spot that you can only have reloaded with single shot if they are keeping a close eye on the table.

The Black Pearl rising is just incredible,
and the 'wash' is a superb idea,
Like the transparent bases, but would stick to thicker size
as we use a lot at demo / participation games at games shows
as already commented ...Joe Public isn't that careful moving ships around...
    But brilliant ideas...
