Going baseless?
So has anyone explored color printing the ship's card on clear plastic? A bit of tacky glue dots could secure the ship to the card for the game and be popped off afterwards, it would make the ships look like they are truly afloat . . . just wondering . . . : )

In this last one you can just make out the Kate card underneath so you can see how see through they are.

I think some have forgone the SoG cards completely. See Julian's 'conversion' of HMS Spartiate below. He's painted the firing arcs on a base which I'm assuming could be lifted completely out of the SoG plastic base?

It appears the bases can be switched from SOG to display bases. I will make a celluloid base like I am thinking for discussion purposes . . . I do like the flat appearance, but I think we can go a bit further in the transparency area . . .
Only prob with those there are no coloured bands for judging wind gauge direction.
If you're referring to Julian's bases that's true, but you could easily paint the edge of the bases to reflect the correct wind gauge?Originally Posted by Union Jack

Or create a ring template to hold over the ship, as I use in my Form Line of Battle rules.
Here is a quick example of what I am after, a thin card of clear plastic and a few minutes with some permanent color markers . . .

Now you can get a feel for what I am after, use of overhead transparency film and a good color copier and I think it would work quite well!
That's real nice. That's what I originally hoped they would do for this game - make clear bases like they have in Wings of Glory.
I have been contemplating moving over to just a clear base myself, I will start experimenting. I like what I see so far though.
I just tried out a transparent base card for the US ships which you can print onto transparent OHP acetates.
Names and stats can be added to suit. Should be simple to create for any ship using a scanned image of the original card and just adding the name of any new ships to order.

This I think helps the over-all look of the ships. It comes away from the token/toy look of the ships. From the beginning this has been one of the problems with the whole system. The one little thing Ares would not do. Put the peg on the base and not on the ship. Why?

Why not use heavy duty card sleeves? Put the base card in a clear sleeve with another card to add to the stiffness? Of course that wouldn't work if you want the ocean/mat to show through the base card?

You still have that Bl~#*y peg under the ship! That is the problem. Ed did show some years back the thick clear bases that may work with the above ideas

It is easy to mount the Acetate onto a clear 3mm acrylic base and then the ship on top as a compromise between the two systems.

This is true, but on several ships now I've removed the peg completely and rely on rare earth magnets that I've installed in the ship hull to hold it on the plastic bases. So many of my ships (and all of my Langton builds) have flat bottoms.
As it turns out I took one of the Mayday sleeves to see how it worked with the base cards and they are actually too big for them. I know what I'd use as a substitute, but as I'm not really into modeling these days it's not a priority. Besides it looks like Dave and Rob have worked out their own version regardless.

I know I'm practising thread necromancy here, but....
Make the base out of 2mm acetate, drill a 3mm hole dead centre, stick a 3mm x 2mm round neodymium magnet in it. fit a matching one or even just a thin piece of strip steel or steel paper to the bottom of the ship in place of the peg?

I am into resurrections! Did any one pursue the clear card base beyond these beginnings? I have not done a thing since my mini clipper phase and micro America's Cup race . . . need some time on the water! I also got lost in the history of the windjammers on the Pacific coast, way cool ships and history . . .
