    Default Sailing around the World

David (Naharaht) suggested sailing a ship around the world, similarly to the Aerodrome's flying of a Caproni bomber - excellent idea: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...Tour-2012-2013

I am willing to launch such a ship in the new year, coordinating its navigation. To do so, I suggest we start collecting dates of area conventions in which the ship can be showcased. We also need to decide on a ship.

If anyone wants to help with such a project, please let me know. The more, the merrier.

Sounds like a great idea. I meant to respond to David's idea, but got sidetracked by Ares news. Maybe start looking at conventions listed here: http://gameconventioncentral.com/

Choosing a ship might be a challenge if folks have strong feelings about which one would be best? Something from the starter set seems most likely if we want the voyage to begin earlier in 2014. A custom ship from Ares would be cool, but not realistic of course.

Let me know if I can help although GenCon is about the only game convention I make each year.

I'm tempted to suggest the KS-exclusive Bellerophon, make it a "Kicking Boney's Arse From East to West and Everywhere In Between" theme. LOL

Can we at least finish the one we have out there at the moment... oh, and maybe ACTUALLY GETTING THE MINIS... before plunging headlong into this?

Great Idea, seems a pity no one thought of it earlier, since the pre-production demo copy has been at how many cons so far? Not to mention it would stand out as being a pre-production era model and includes the first custom rigged ship.

Eric, I can donate a rigged and ratlined ship for the cause.

To keep the logistical side of things more manageable, should we limit the number of stops in each country? If so, how many? We know from the flight of the Caproni that it takes well over a year for this type of thing to truly happen.

    Thanks, Keith.

I think it would be good to have it hit as many different countries around the world as possible. That would require limiting how much time it spends in any one country. If possible, we should coordinate it so it can be at the major cons.

If I could make a suggestion as well? Have the ship start off its journey with some form of ceremonial 'christening'? It could be at a big con, little con or just Keith posting photos before shipping it to the first country?

I was thinking about launching it from Origins, to return to Origins the following year. This year, I will be running a lot of SoG games there, and we'll have the Aerodrome's Lend-Lease player and a big WoG group. Most of all, this is the big con Keith attends.

I think a christening of some type would be in order. If we get the details worked out in time, it could start it's maiden voyage at Origins this year and perhaps wrap up at GenCon next year?

Edit: Guess I should update the page before replying. lol

I'd like to propose the UK's Naval Wargames Show in Gosport in June as being an appropriate stopover. Could even get the old billy ruffian (or whichever ship it happens to be) on the quarterdeck on Victory for a photoshoot

When in June David? Origins is in June as well, so might be difficult if we start there... but nothing says we can't end there instead... giving the ship to the 2015 Lend-Lease member (if we do that here on the Anchorage).

21/22nd. I guess, having seen the speed that the Penguins achieved in their Fogg-esque trip the ship could make her appearance in Gosport in June 2015 :)

If you are the second stop, we could try expediting shipping; otherwise, we could make the UK the final stop the following year.

Is the Naval Wargames Show the big one for you?

size wise its not very big at all. but it is the UK's only totally naval themed wargames show :)

Final stop would probably work well, removing the need for speedy and probably expensive postage to meet a deadline that, with good planning, wouldn't be necessary

I think we have our bookends, then. Now, we need to compile a list of ports to visit in-between. These two cons will give us the start/finish dates. Let the logistics begin.

Since absolutely nothing of naval interest ever happened up here, I think we can bypass PNW altogether. Heck, there's not even a decent replica of any of the HBTC ships here....

Pity it didn't get made including visiting Hermione, but I would guess she's still out there. It would be great to have a ship visit Victory, Constitution, Trincomalee, Hermione, Rose/Surprise, Gotheburg and what other ships there are in the right timeframe for the game.

Folks, I would be happy to do such a launch this year at Origins. Maybe our LL participant would be willing to bring it to PragueCon, and from there to the U.K.

    It's good being back on-deck.

Near the end of January, within the span of about a week, I was assigned a new dissertation chair, two adjunct positions for courses starting on the 14th of March fell through with me picking up these courses, and a new family medical issue arose. So for the past five weeks, I have been responding to all these changes. Things are finally settling.

It certainly sounds like you've have a stressful time, Eric. I hope the dust is settling and life can return to a semblance of normalcy?

Wonderful, Rob. It would be great for her to sail into many ports and be back for Origins 2017.

We'll have to figure out what ship.

With things settling, I will sail my January and February missions this week. We're on spring break, so I will be writing most of the day; these missions will make for a wonderful afternoon break. We're supposed to have warmer days later in the week, so the sun should provide good lighting for Sue to take pictures.

Odd to say one ship did visit the Hermione when she was in Yorktown and I have the proof here.

I would not be averse to starting the ball rolling here in England as the tradition goes from here in the past. If someone could coordinate the route and check the progress as it sails around the world.
Eric could break a bottle over the bows when he visits us.

Then that means no pics of it with my Avenger fighter from Star Citizen once I get it 3d-printed? :( (Avenger's nickname is "Penguin" for its portly shape and black-and-white color scheme.)
