    Default On this day 19 April - Captain Cook and Eastern Australia

    On the 19th of April 1770, having just completed mapping the New Zealand coastline, Captain James Cook, commanding the Endeavour, reached the south-eastern coast of Australia at 6:00 p.m. He and his crew were the first recorded Europeans to see eastern Australia. Cook named the land New South Wales.
