I am looking forward to this event very much Chris. It is a very nice venue, and the added bonus is that it is so near to home. My Fleet is at your disposal Commodore.

Well, what a day. Back home after Partizan today.
Really nice to get to the venue and see every one. Enjoyed a good day doing sails, although we only got through a couple of games. Must say a big thanks to Bligh, Ensign Patch, Dr Maturin, Union Jack and captain Kiwi for taking part and a hello Rafa j Larwood.
I will post pics this week of the action.
What was more than a little dissapointing, not a single punter stopped for a game of Sails.
Lots stopped to talk and I pointed at least three people towards buying a Starter set, showed a further 4 or 5 the game mechanics received very favourable commnts on my ships, but nobody wanted to play
I could have sold 8 starter sets and a number of ships, but nobody wanted to sit and play...really dont get it.

Now we had a couple of very enjoyable games between ourselves and lots of people wanting to talk about the game but no joy. I really am at a loss now.
Anyway as I said pics this week

My gut reaction would be that most folks love the look of the game, but might feel it's too complicated to sit down and just 'play'. You see that at Gen Con and other conventions where many just want to observe other folks demoing games.

Even the basic game uses a lot of 'stuff' on the table with the chits, ships. maneuver cards, etc. It might be too intimidating for some folks to just jump in? I don't know what else to suggest?

Never mind the french only have one three decker. Lets take it.
What do yo mean you both have no crew left?
That means I have to supply a prize crew for the Frenchie, and a relief crew for you as well.

Two sinkings and a three decker as a prize! Not a bad day's work for HMS Spartiate.
With a lot of help from the other British Captains, Reg and Andy who gave their all in the cause.
A very close run thing, with Commodore Simon being the last to fall.

With two British 74s closing in for the Kill Admiral Neil scuttles off over the horizon.

I actually survived the whole day, that's a first, and did not catch fire once.

So I wonder who set off the Fire Alarm this time?

Ahhh nice to see Rob, my Royal Sovereign first fire on Le Berwick and a bow rake, double shotted meant 13 A and B damage, no mercy,
Then we managed a stern rake on the Commerse de Marseille, unfortunately I was down to a 3 broadside after taking fire the previous turn from said vessel, she then helped take out the 74 Redoubtable with roundshot and muskets. A pleasing game even though we could'nt catch up with Commerse de Marseille.

We gave it our best Commodore. We gave our best, and it was probably just as well that i did not catch Commerce De Marseilles in the state that my ship was.

    Hello guys
Thanks for putting up a good show. I had a good talk with Captain Duff (Chris) about the game and the history of the Navy. I am getting used to the game mechanics now. Our club will be doing another game this coming Friday. Will let you know how it goes.
I told Chris about my book collection of Royal Navy history and would like to help anyone who might like to know a history of a particular ship between the period of 1739-1815. My collection is still on-going...
    Happy sailing to all☺
    Cheers
    Richard

Hi Richard, glad you enjoyed the show and our talk.
I was very interested in your collection of books and information.
For others Richard has made a library of his own colating information on individual RN ships in the period all from different sources. So if you have any questions about the history of a particular ship drop him a pm

    Hello,

    I was one of those people who stopped by the game without actually playing it. When I read your post, three points came to mind;

    1. I arrived at the venue at approx. 11.30, by then there were already people leaving the show. I believe there are fewer people spending all day at these shows and therefore thinking twice about the time required to join in a game. It was certainly one of my considerations.
    2. When I first visited the table, it looked like a game well in progress with the participants engrossed in the game, which I now understand as everyone there was an experienced player. On this first visit I even sat down on one of the chairs and wasn't immediately recruited to play.
    3. On a subsequent visit I had a good discussion about playing the game solo and I was recruited to the Anchorage. I am definitely inspired to get my copy of the game from the shelf and onto the table.

I think for SoG participations that are designed for new or newer players, like myself, you might want to look at what Martin Goddard does for his Peter Pig demos. He will often just either play a single newbie or umpire two newbies, either way the lucky participants get a very intensive and quick intro to the game. I would definitely have taken part in such a session at Partizan.

Having said all that I really enjoyed your game and was admiring the ratlines that you used and other in play accessories, as well as the scale and general beauty of the table. Most importantly it has inspired me to join this group and get my game out often enough to get proficient at it and enjoy it.

Thanks for all the effort in putting on the demonstration, it was not wasted!

    Regards
    Garry Wills

    Hi Gary,
Thanks for the input, its is comments like yours that will help us to improve the general layout and process used to get the game going.
Generally speaking, after set up we get a game going to start things off, allowing new players to join in or for someone to explain what is going on then get them playing.
I can only say sorry you were not invited into the game at first, that was the whole idea of the participation game.
Glad you got to speak to someone in the end and really pleased you liked what you saw to join us.
Hopefully for the next outing, which is the games expo in Birmingham, we will take your comments to heart.
Welcome to the anchorage and if you have any further questions just shout, someone will answer.

Good to see that you decided to join us Gary, and that you are willing to give us the punters eye view.
I am also flattered to be considered an experienced player. It was in fact my fifth game at a show. One of the other members was doing his first show game, having played only thrice in his life, and really only Chris is really experienced.
When we get a bit better at it, I'm sure we will learn to engage with the public more on first contact.
Thank you for pointing us in the right direction on this.
I hope you will in turn enjoy what you get out of the Anchorage in the way of information and helpful tips.
Meantime do pop into the Wardroom for a virtual drop of ale and a chinwag with your new shipmates.
May you have a fair wind and a safe voyage.
    Rob.
