Default Re-considering the Boston Tea Party thing . . .

After a trip to an English Tea House today and discovering this:

Vanilla flavored Black Tea! And making it at home as successfully!

Makes we wonder why we tossed the tea out with the taxes?

Having sampled tea in the grand old US of A Clipper, I can well understand why your chaps tossed it into the harbour.
It was the best thing to do with it.

Unless, of course, it would make a bay of tea. The inventive Americans perhaps have heated it first.

I doubt that would have improved it any Jonas.
I believe that the greatest iniquity that we inflicted upon the colonies was not the fact that we taxed their tea, but the effrontery of making them pay a tax on such an inferior product. Talk about adding insult to injury.

I meant that it might not be the best thing to do with it.

Believe me Jonas, it was certainly the best thing to do with it, and look where it lead to.

When last I flew home from the states I changed airplanes in London and emptied my pockets in security as you have to do. The officer asked me what that thing was pointing to a pyramid shaped teabag. I answered "PG-tips. You never get good tea on airplanes." and she smiled knowingly.

I haven't tested the US tea since my mother lived in California and she always made sure to have British tea, and not the bad export tea but the good stuff.

PG Tips reminds me of an incident which happened to me when I was about 16 years old Jonas.

Every Summer holidays I went to help out in my Aunt's husband's garage in Den Haag. My Aunt had been in Holland during the war, and craved for English tea, so my mother saved up packets all year, and when I went to Holland she sent me with an extra suitcase full of packets of tea.
At Dutch Customes I was asked what was in the cases. "My clothes in this one I answered."
    "and the other one sir."
    "Tea."
    "Please open the case sir."
He then opened a packet, smelled the leaves, tasted the leaves, and called another Customs Officer over.
Having gone through the same routine.
"Yes it is tea." He concurred.
    The next question!
"How long do you plan on staying sir?"
    "Five weeks."
By the time they had stopped laughing, and that must be a first for Dutch Customs Officials, no fewer than five Officers were clustered around my case, undoubtedly making remarks about the eccentric insane English.
They let me go, but I have never taken tea to Holland again.
    Rob.

Only the captain drinks his tea alone on a ship of war.

    You have good adventures, Rob!

Only the Captain could afford to drink tea, Jonas. In the 19th century tea was a luxury drink.

I'd lock all that sugar away as well Jonas.
There's a bob or two worth there as well.

I remember a date just after we married. All the lads from the unit came over for a cuppa. Whereupon swmbo asked what they would like: Tea please came the answer in various quantities, "and how do you like it?" came the next question, whereupon the lads all chipped in NATO please. My good wife had us all in fits as she replied "but I only have PG tips, we don't have NATO!".

(you have to be a squaddie or ex forces to understand that one)
