Default USS Constitution vs. HMS Guerriere--Repaint

My latest repaint project isn't quite finished as I'm not satisfied with the flags and pennants I've been working on. I took an idea Jonas used on his ships; drilling holes in the masts so you can insert and remove flags and pennants. I'm still refining the wire used and the material for flags. It's closer to a look I'd prefer, but not quite right yet. I do like how HMS Guerriere turned out and it's a color scheme I may use on other ships. Eventually I'll get the light box set up again and take some better shots. Cheers!

Another nice job Jim! Are you going to make cards for other British 38s from the War of 1812 to use with the model?

I probably could, but my skills along these lines aren't the best. My first attempt was too small and I think the font should be a bit larger for the ship names? If I do more I can post them in the files section. Actually, I should do Java for sure, but if memory serves DB wasn't sure the sculpt was going to work in that capacity?

Looks good Jim. You guys are making me feel bad about not putting more time into painting and building. Maybe I should give up shooting for a few weeks and spend more time painting ships.
Ha, ha, ha. Ain't gonna happen.

    Beautiful ships, Jim!

I wish I had the ratlines to put them on all ships. I think it makes a big difference.
I only have a few, but I should start adding those and hope Kieth makes more for wave 2 and wave 1 74:s...

Those added boats on the stern looks vary good!

I'm glad I could be an inspiration. I think having that system makes it easier to have the right ships for big battles and I have a vision of them being possible to use for other nations in a pinch...

Jonas, I've gone back to using the Langton ratlines on most of the ships. You just need to use one size larger than the rating your applying them to. So for HMS Guerriere I used the 74 ratlines from Langeton's. It's only when you get to the 1st Rates that you have size problems. The 3D (3 Decker) ratlines just aren't long enough.

Yes, I do like the ability to insert the pennants into the mast. I just got some gauge 26 beading wire which may work out perfectly if I can get my flags and pennants to look more realistic.

Thank you, Rob. I used Bodoni MT, but I rather fudged around with the scale settings to get it to fit.

We had a thread going here: http://sailsofglory.org/showthread.p...ghlight=bodoni

Ken has the chits, etc. figured as this: http://sailsofglory.org/showthread.p...ghlight=bodoni

Best match was found by Ken again. See here Post #20. "Adobe Bauer Bodoni Condensed" http://sailsofglory.org/showthread.p...ghlight=bodoni

Nice ships Jim. I also use Langton ratlines for my SoG ships. I think it is stronger than other ratlines.
This week I will finish my HMS Victory. I am anxious to show it.

For the problem of the length of the ratlines, I use a pair of ratlines per SOG ship and I use the longer ratlines.

Rory, you do realize that you and Vol were the inspiration for me getting into Age of Sail model ship building back in 2013 when I first came on board here? So, it's really all your own fault! Thank you for helping me find such a satisfying hobby and letting me share it with others here on the Anchorage. It's been a real pleasure.

Actually, it was Guerriere I was unsure about, Java is a close design relative of the Hebes. OTOH, Guerriere too is very dimensionally similar... the British used standardized designs, the French were generally more "as long as you meet these specs to the N-th picayune detail you may design and build as you see fit."

I knew I got it backwards! But now I'll be all set for the Java. Thanks for the reminder.

Looking forward to your How To, Jim. At times, Keith bumps certain things to the How To article status, in case you're interested.
I took some photos from this first effort, which are still in my album, but I've had a set up ready to go to do a better presentation with product names. I'll try for that today, but I have this large AAR I'm looking at as well.

    As time permits, my Friend.

I hope to spend sometime today working through AARs - reading, that is. Unfortunately, today is the first day of sunshine and pleasant temps, so I am itching to be outside. Tomorrow looks like rain again.

Agreed. Weather is the same here with thunderstorms forecast for tomorrow. That probably means the grass needs to be cut, AGAIN!

I'm thinking about buying a goat. I just cut the grass, but need to do so again.

    Everything is green, though.

Yes, I'm not really complaining. We have grass growing again in spots that haven't seen green in several years. It's nice for a change.
