    Default Studding sail

    I'm not that fond of the look, but it's not that hard to make from a sail. Is it good enough?

    I'm making HMS Superb 1798 and due to it having that reputation of being fast I thought I'd let her set more sails.

    I know it should be tighter at the top and wider at the bottom, but as I said, it's easy to make like this from a main topsail.

    Very cool, Jonas.

    I wonder what type of house rule can be implemented if a ship adopts a studded sail setting. Hmmm.

    Great idea and nicely done. The look might be improved even more by shaving the spars thinner? Then again, I wouldn't have thought to even add studding sails so just ignore me

    A superb idea Jonas.
    Should get a speed bonus, although by 1805 she was not so fast.
    See if you can spot the mistake in this poem?

    The wind was rising easterly, the morning sky was blue,
    The Straits before us opened wide and free;
    We looked towards the Admiral, where high the Peter flew,
    And all our hearts were dancing like the sea.
    'The French are gone to Martinique with four and twenty sail!
    The Old _Superb_ is old and foul and slow,
    But the French are gone to Martinique, and Nelson's on the trail.
    And where he goes the Old _Superb_ must go!'

    So Westward ho! for Trinidad, and Eastward ho! for Spain,
    And 'Ship ahoy!' a hundred times a day;
    Round the world if need be, and round the world again,
    With a lame duck lagging all the way.

    The Old _Superb_ was barnacled and green as grass below,
    Her sticks were only fit for stirring grog;
    The pride of all her midshipmen was silent long ago,
    And long ago they ceased to heave the log.
    Four year out from home she was, and ne'er a week in port,
    And nothing save the guns aboard her bright;
    But Captain Keats he knew the game, and swore to share the sport,
    For he never yet came in too late to fight.

    So Westward ho! for Trinidad, and Eastward ho! for Spain,
    And 'Ship ahoy!' a hundred times a day;
    Round the world if need be, and round the world again,
    With a lame duck lagging all the way.

    'Now up, my lads,' the Captain cried, 'for sure the case were hard
    If longest out were first to fall behind;
    Aloft, aloft with studding sails, and lash them on the yard,
    For night and day the Trades are driving blind!'
    So all day long and all day long behind the fleet we crept,
    And how we fretted none but Nelson guessed;
    But every night the Old _Superb_ she sailed when others slept,
    Till we ran the French to earth with all the rest.

    Oh, 'twas Westward ho! for Trinidad, and Eastward ho! for Spain,
    And 'Ship ahoy!' a hundred times a day;
    Round the world if need be, and round the world again,
    With a lame duck lagging all the way.

    Sir Henry Newbolt.

    You attach the studdingsail to the yardarm, not the yard.

    She was still fast when the British were racing for the French at San Domingo.

    Hi Jonas,
    You should put a studding sail on the lower arm and the opposite side fore mast as well to match. See Langton's web site (sail settings) or Vol's blog A miniatures hobby room. for more information. I like what you have done very much. This is not a put-down.

    Oh, I'm green with envy erm no, that was just the Russian hull.

    I'm not sure how many I will make but, I think I'll make them symmetrical. I'm aiming for fore and main studding topsails. I'm not sure it would look that good with any more and there's the problem with the inbuilt yardarms that's hard to change and use for more than just one sail.

    They are made, by the way, out of a main mast left-over from the Tonnant build. The top gallant and royal on the foremast is cut from that same mainmast.

    I must order a couple more ships to cannibalize for masts sails and dis masted ships. They add so much more to the verisimilitude of an action photograph of the games.

    They do!

    That's why I thought the Tonnant-mod that left me with two halves was an ok exchange.

    It works for a surrendered ship with damaged masts and sails over the missing part.

    It also gave me sails to use for this mod.

    I have to have a spare mast or two to cut sails from to make mine. Yours, Paul, might be better in that way. It'll just be the one ship in my fleet that has studding sails set.

    Thank you all, for your kind words.

    Hm...

    When at full sails, and having plotted an increase sails action, you move the ship an additional musket range straight ahead.

    So, if you're building a Tonnant, using 2 x 74's you end up with a short bow, a short stern and a full suite of sails to make into studding sails.

    I've used the top of the mainmast and the topsail for the Superb already.

    I'll build a new foremast with a broken topmast and add the sail over the gap on the wreckage.

    Re: The poem. No mistake, the term "Yard" does refer to a "Yardarm."

    From the Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea: "Yard, (1) a large wooden or metal spar crossing the masts of a ship horizontally or diagonally, from which a sail is set."

    Cheers

    I have to try those studding sails.
    One minor suggestion, set the flags and pennants at the bottom of the pin and clip the top, so the pins don't show.

    Gunner, it's also about having the guts to press it all the way down. It's a tight fit so the flags won't fall off, but it makes it a little hard to put them in all the way. I have snipped it off at the top though.

    I am, but its still a tight fit between the pin and the hole. And no apologies needed.
