Default USS Philadelphia--Sails of Glory Repaint

Thanks to Bobby's thread on the US Navy in 1797 I got the idea to repaint the HMS Sybille into the USS Philadelphia. The Wave 2 ship had arrived with a broken foremast so it was in repair/drydock mode to begin with, but I also removed the mainmast to make painting easier, both on the deck and on the sails. I went with the buff color like the photo of the USS Boston. I'm pretty sure I'll be doing some other "US" repaints and will probably move over to the white masts, etc. This is my first attempt to do running rigging on an Ares SoG ship. I also used the Wave 1 brass ratlines from the Anchorage Store. They're are not perfect fits, but the only really noticeable problem is on the foremast (too short on the lower ones). SoL ratlines are way too large for these medium frigates and with the exception of the foremast the SGN103 ratlines worked pretty well. Finally, I recently found a small acrylic display case at Michael's that's normally intended to display baseballs, but with some modification I think some ships (thinking USS Constitution special edition) might look nice in them? Photos follow. Cheers!

Great model and ship card, Jim.

    So much lovely details...

    Jim, you make me sick.
While I was working on my ship, I thought it was looking pretty good.
Then you had to post your repaint and I feel like giving up.
    Thanks.

    Great job.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments. It's your feedback and ideas that provide 99.9% of the inspiration to do these repaints. It really is a pleasure being part of this crowd.

I like the display case idea.
After all the work I've done I figure my ships will be in the china cabinet between games.
Now if I could make the wave insert that one person did. Can't find the post but he also replace the SOG masts and sails.

That would be Julian's work here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/osisfyff6u...conversion.pdf

And you can also buy the bases from Langton's: http://www.rodlangton.com/

    Cheers.

I sure hope you don't give up!? I'm still waiting to see your Russian ships? And I've seen some of your other work, which looked pretty good to me (but they might have been the ships that got crushed in moving?).

Most are still crushed. Most of my spare time is going into reloading and practicing cowboy fast draw. (Much practice needed to compete at my age).

But I am working on a few SGN models, at least I was until I saw your post. Just kidding, still working on them.

Jim, she is beautiful. Well done, Sir.

    The Americans are now arriving.

Thanks, Vol. I like the heft of the metal ships, and you can't beat the detail of GHQ or Langton sculpts, but the scale is just a little easier to work on in terms of eye strain and handling of smaller parts, etc.

I started playing WGS, so anything is possible.

To be fair, when Jim is finished with these ships, they don't quite look like they did coming out of the box.

Alright, alright already! I must admit the inovative customization and rebuilds some of you guys are doing to what started out as plastic toy ships is drawing me to the dark side. I'm beginning to feel the need to find out what I can do with one. Has anyone seen the rebuild Julian has done to HMS Spartiate over on TMP? Awesome is the only word I can come up with. He even rebuilt the base. I highly recommend a peek.

Yes, we've seen Julian's amazing work here. He's done a number of custom builds that are exceptional.

Vol, I expect that if you do get a chance to work on one of the SoG ships you're custom masts and sails will really make them shine? We'll be waiting. . . .
