On 13 September 1803, Commodore John Barry died at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served in the Continental Navy and commanded numerous vessels in the American Revolution. In 1794, Barry was appointed the senior Captain of the newly established U.S. Navy and was in charge of building the frigate United States. Commanding the vessel during the Quasi-War with France, he captured a number of vessels in the West Indies.
